The territorial constructive diversity of traditional techniques: types of half-timbered walls in the Spanish northeast

This article presents a description of the types of half-timbered walls documented from the Galaico-Leones Massif to the Cantabrian Mountains, using a classification system based on typological, geometrical, material and finish characteristics. Specifically, a total of 377 examples of varying complexity located in the territories of Ribeira Sacra, Comarca del Bierzo, Macizo Asturiano, Comarca de Liébana, Montes Vascos, Montaña Alavesa, Valles Alaveses, Litoral Vasco, Montes Navarros and Condado de Treviño are analysed. As part of a wider investigation covering the study of 1,218 half-timbered walls spread throughout Spain, with their classification and analysis of the state of conservation and transformation, it highlights the great diversity of construction solutions that exist and highlights the value and presence of this particular technique, reaffirming the need to protect, rehabilitate and consolidate this type of traditional architecture.
