Settlements under strip footings. Comparison of classic methods and F. E. M. methods

Conventional approaches for the analysis of foundations consider the soil as an elastic material, without any consideration of plastic behavior or friction. Nevertheless, it is widely accepted that this is an over-simplification. In this paper, non-linear models were developed using finite element methods, and considering soil-footing interactions and elasto-plastic behavior. Specifically, we compared maximum settlements estimated by conventional linear methods and by non-linear methods, and the effect of different loads and different footing dimensions has been studied. In all cases only two dimensions were considered (i.e. the footings were assumed to be of infinite length. In this paper, the behavior of strip footings subject to combined vertical. horizontal and moment loading has been studied.
