Sustainable alternative masonry to replace fired clay blocks in the BENO system

The BENO is a building system, consisting of prefabricated slabs made with fired clay blocks, bonded with mortar and reinforced with ribbed steel rebar and joined at the back. Its main disadvantages are the difficulty in finding suppliers of clay blocks and the fact that this masonry productive process is considered polluting. The objective of this work was to seek alternative masonry that could be manufactured along with the slabs without altering their mechanical properties. Three alternative blocks were evaluated: stabilized earth with Portland cement; recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) agglomerated with Portland cement; and e-waste plastic agglomerated with Portland cement. The physical and mechanical properties of the blocks, the bonding stress to the mortar, and the compressive strength of the BENO walls were studied. It was concluded that all BENO wall alternatives meet the requirements of the CIRSOC501E regulations.
