The article addresses the role of technical journals in building innovation and draws attention to the inherent risks in the attempts to adapt them to new designs without suitable analysis of the specifics involved.
To this end, the technical journals used in recent decades are reviewed and the periods when they were in circulation established, in the context of a discussion of the chief constructional and operational failures prompted by errors attributable to the indiscriminate adoption of the new technical developments described in their pages.
Lastly, the basic conditioning factors to be borne in mind in construction design are analyzed and the importance of their application to new products or systems prior to their adoption is stressed.
