The work presented in these pages originated from a study commissioned by Barcelona Provincial Council's Architectural Heritage Service, in which data was gathered on a broad sample of brickwork industrial chimneys in order to analyse the factors that have contributed or continue to contribute to their physical deterioration and the progressive jeopardising of their safety. The aspects considered include cracking patterns and damage found, and also data deduced from the analytical evaluation of its strength characteristics. There is also an overview of feasibly applicable standard measures for their repair, attending to the causes of the damage in each particular case. The main objective of the study is to provide information for use in the preservation of chimney stacks that are still prone to processes of unnecessary total or partial destruction of their physical integrity.
