Economical recuperation of mining regions and industrial heritage. The case of Sabero, Leon/Spain

For 1992-1993, the Diputación Provincial de León (León Provincial Government) participated in Ouverture Programme (European Union) for economical and environmental recuperation of former mining regions. In this paper, industrial heritage is seen like one of the activities to be accomplished in order to get the aforementioned recuperation of mining regions, particularly, those of coal. Then, treatment given to the industrial heritage into the coal mining regions of Wales, Limburg and Nord Pas-de-Calais will be described. Finally: the case of the valley of Sabero will be presented -this valley immersed in an economic recovering process after coal mining close down dating from 1993-; some of the most important elements of its industrial heritage will be shown, and also, explained the adequacy and opportunities of preserving at least in a documentary and graphic way, most of the industrial heritage belonging to the valley of Sabero.
