This article presents a historical overview of the key questions that have marked the evolution of the study of straight prismatic elements subjected to compression loads. Straight prismatic elements are researched considering the practical problems on the basis of which models and the theory explaining their behaviour have been developed.
The problems that give rise to the origin of the theory of the beam-column are reviewed in the fi rst section (buckling loads and stability) and their subsequent developments: imperfections, large deformations, shear deformation and asymmetries. On the other hand, new problems in relationship to the behavior of the material (plasticity, rheology) and its three dimensional nature are considered. Finally, the application of fracture and damage theory to the study of the behaviour of the columns is mentioned.
