Abstract

The region of Jerez has been a research territory not only referring to wine production systems, but also relating to an architectural investigation about the wineries. The continuous evolution of the wine sector has led to a transformation, over the last two centuries, of the types of wineries, in terms of their construction systems and spatiality. In this context, the International Wineries were built in 1974, designed by the Arquinde Technical Office, a building that represented an unprecedented constructive and structural challenge in the sector: the construction with a dry joint and in two years of a 50 000 m2 winery. The prefabricated concrete construction system used, the spatial and structural research proposed, closer to the Mat Building, than to the traditional “bodega catedral” sherry, made this unknown building an example of first class technological innovation.
