Abstract

In history of road engineering, the name of John Loudon McAdam has an honor place as the inventor of macadam. However, his original design had several limitations, which were solved by Richard Lovell Edgeworth. This combined design of both engineers prevailed because of its better benefits through European roads and western world highways. The decease of Edgeworth in 1817, two years before McAdam published his main work, favored that history forgot the contribution of the Irish engineer. This paper presents the Edgeworth’s contribution to macadam conception, essential to the success of the design, and explains the international spread of this kind of pavement structure across the roads of western countries at the very beginning.
