The Scala building by Jesús García del Castillo: 50 years of validity

The impact of building activity linked to the tourist phenomenon of the 60s triggered a new urban scene on the Alicante coast that currently presents a landscape of deteriorated and adulterated buildings. However, in the scenario there are and resist models whose initial design conditions have favored their temporary adaptation. This article highlights one of them, the Scala building on Playa de San Juan, from an approach to its historical context as well as the architectural foundations of the author, Jesús García del Castillo. Through an approach organized around the criteria of modernity applied to the project, the research identifies the implementation of the building, its material honesty and rational distribution as three relevant aspects to maintain, 50 years after its construction, the validity of the Scala building. The final considerations link the valuation of the building with the current panorama of tourist architecture.
