Abstract

The castle of Niebla is one of the best preserved fortified complexes in Andalusia. The present plan is estimated to date from the 15th century. During the restoration work on the barbican, the remains of a vegetable garden, a well and its pool were found. Due to the fact that the well is attached to the barbican, the wheel had very unique characteristics as the animal could not turn around it. The aim of the article is to define the constructive solutions for the restoration of the hydraulic mechanism of the old wooden wheel by showing its configuration. The methodology followed is based on historical research, the collection of data in situ from other waterwheels and a study of their design based on an invention made in the 13th century. The results confirm the operation of a less conventional and more demanding type of wheel from the construction point of view.
