Abstract

Mart Stam was a Dutch architect concerned with the problems of the society. With a low volume of built work, this text is analyses one of his largest built projects, a retirement home for the elderly in Frankfurt am Main, built at the time of Ernst May’s Neues Frankfurt. Considered to be preeminent member of the radical wing of European rationalist architecture of the early 20 th century, on this occasion he designed a building for the low-income aging population, together with Werner Moser and Ferdinand Kramer. A building designed at a human scale where users maintained their individuality by living collectively. A construction devised on quantifiable scientific criteria, such as sunlight and interior circulations, an economic approach, leaving the building stripped of irrelevant aesthetic elements. An Architecture recognized as Construction in which arbitrariness was replaced by objectivity. A building that could be described as sachlich.
